The Butter Factory in Myrtleford is about 350km from Melbourne in the Victorian high country. Run by Naomi Ingleton and her talented mother, who both trained in Melbourne, this café and produce store is on the verge of launching commercial butter production making certified organic butter, buttermilk, buttermilk soaps and a skincare range.
The food is competent and is clearly influenced by Naomi’s time spent in Italian kitchens and the Italian population in the area. I chose the ricotta gnocchi with tomato and basil sauce. The gnocchi was delightfully light and the sauce was quite simple and peppered with mozzarella and black olives. My dining buddy tucked into the Wagyu burger which he said was the best burger he’d had in years. The vibe is casual but clearly the locals know the food is quality for at 2:30pm on an unremarkable Sunday afternoon it was packed.
It’s worth spending a weekend in this area and sampling the food and wine offering from Milawa through to Bright.
